As businesses convert more and more jobs over to autmoated systems (AI, robots, etc.) what responsisbility do they hold to the broader ecomony or the well-being of those being replaced. Those jobs will no longer exist. Whose responobility is that?

Automation and efficient production of lower cost goods benefit society as a whole. Each generation of residents need to be taught better skills in our education systems so they can be employed in the improved society and contribute to its well being. The responsibility for providing improved education and new employment opportunities is the responsibility of society as a whole and is delivered by the government structure it chooses to follow. Governments gather some of the profits and wages from the companies and employees and need to invest those revenues in the education and opportunity creation for temporarily displaced workers.

Are you saying companies should focus solely on profits and efficiency? - Bear 81 months ago
Here's an idea, what if companies replacing a human workforce with automation were required ,as severance. to cover the cost of new training for those being replaced. The training would be required to be in set industries that lower odds of being replaced in the future. - Bear 81 months ago
Yes, that is exactly my point. Trying to determine if an employee is laid off due to inadequate performance, a normal business downturn or because of automation would be extremely difficult, and if you penalize the companies for displaced workers, they will always ascribe the cause to some other reason. Regulations and penalties don't work well in business, providing incentives is much easier. - Len 81 months ago
